OCTA State Conference: A
first-timer's view
(or "I was an OCTA virgin")

I must admit that initially,
the idea of spending Labor Day Weekend in Columbus, Ohio, seemed to be
more of a punishment than a reward for being part of an excerpt chosen
to go to the state OCTAFest! However, after spending an exhausting, exhilarating,
educational and sometimes silly two-and-a-half days at OCTAFest, I can
honestly say that it was one of the most worthwhile and rewarding weekends
I've ever had. In addition to performing an excerpt of Falcon Production's
"Schoolhouse Rock Live!" (which was a great experience -- even better than
ACT), there were workshops to attend on such subjects as stage management,
lighting (I now actually know what a gobo is!), choreography, and make-up
techniques. I took as many as I could squeeze in between excerpts and those
all-important parties -- and an occasional nap! (Hey, the late night activities
go until 4 AM and the workshops start at 8 AM!) I guess what impressed
me most about the weekend was the overwhelming atmosphere of support and
camaraderie -- everyone there was cheering everyone else on, sharing information
gladly about how they get things done at their theaters, giving me little
tips on things to make my life easier in my new job as high school drama
director. These people embodied the true essence of Community Theatre--
they really want everyone to do well, to succeed in theatre and to have
a whole lot of fun doing it!
